Renovation and addition to the Weston Branch under construction, circa 1981

Plans for an addition and alterations to the library were issued by Dunlop, Farrow & Aitken Architects in September 1980; they designed the addition to be compatible with the original building.

By January 1981, two debentures had been approved by the Ontario Municipal Board, one for $75,000 and another for $275,000. The library closed for the work by August 1981.

Weston Branch reopened to the public on September 11, 1982. The library was now three times larger, increasing from 4,300 to 12,000 square feet, and had two meeting rooms, additional book stacks and parking. A new main entrance was created; the original entrance was retained but only used for special occasions.

The increased space enabled branch staff to offer many more programs, classes and exhibitions to city residents – York was incorporated as a city on June 10, 1983.
